I've never seen a negative impact from the bare bones look, as long as there was at least one hiding place. The crayfish want to hide away when they're molting or have recently molted (whether there's anything in the tank with them or not). But aside from that, I've known quite a few keepers to have gone that route with various species... they all grew, bred, were active, etc.
Keep in mind though, this may depend on the species. Some are very active in open waters where as others are not. A species that comes from a habitat that's high in cover, or lives in burrows, etc may not react as well to a bare/minimal set-up as another species might.

Minimalist tanks for crays?

Ive seen some white and blue lobster set ups the bare bones way with the back and floor painted black, and it looks nice with these extreme colors, but anyone know if there is a negative impact on the inhabitants?
