Please note that Ichthyophthirius multifilis does not affect crayfish. Crayfish can, however, carry the parasites (the cysts of the parasites) and infect or reinfect any fish that may be housed with them. This section is how to handle that scenario.

Also Known As: Ich, White Spot

General/Background information: Ichthyophthirius multifilis is basically a skin infection. It's caused by parasites that burrow into the skin of the fish to feed on blood and dead epithelial cells. The ...

Primarily found in Eurasia, New Zealand and Australia, though there are increasing numbers of reports in the United States.

The question of whether one should intentionally remove the claws or de-thumb the claws of their crayfish is constant reoccurring question in the aquatic community. However, it is neither a safe or humane practice and should not be attempted for the following reasons:

1.) Contrary to popular belief, crayfish actually have a fairly extensive and complex nervous system. And as such, this process is likely to not be entirely painless as once thought. The extent of the pain they feel is not ...

Crayfish are naturally opportunistic scavengers and will eat just about anything they can get their lil' claws on. Suggested foods for your crayfish are:

-Sinking pellets (Carnivore, Algae, Blends, etc)

-Anything that has spirulina in it.

-Fish, live or dead. Some crayfish enjoy scraps, some enjoy catching feeders (please remember, unless you've raised the fish yourself... you'll need to quarantine the feeders first. A lot of them are kept in poor conditions and may be sick or carrying ...

Currently, there is a vast debate on whether or not this species has the potential to be a damaging invasive species. Arguments are split between this species ability to reproduce at an alarming rate without the need of a mate (something that could potentially overrun native species) and it's general passive temperament which allows it to be taken prey by other species.

At the current time, there are thriving (introduced) wild populations of this species in Germany and Madagascar (this ...

Scientific Name: Procambarus sp.

Common Name(s): Marmorkreb, Marbled Crayfish

Adult Size: 4" (reported larger, to 5")

Diet: Like most crayfish, it will eat whatever is available to it. And shows equal preference to either meat or vegetable matter, though meat based foods had to be prepared first. I've never had a Marmorkreb that would actively hunt or catch any live feeders.

Breeding: Reproduces parthenogenetically (without a mate, there are no males in this species) ...
